Born in New Jersey, Cheryl Dunn graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in art history. Inspired by her photographer/film maker mother, she began taking pictures in order to record her surroundings as a shy teenager. After college, she quickly began shooting for magazines such as Raygun, Spin, Vogue, Dazed and Confused ,Grand Royal. Then came advertising campaigns for Levis, Puma, Converse and Wesc. Her photos have been exhibited at MOCA, Deitch Projects, and The Tate Modern. Cheryl was one of the subjects of the documentary, book & traveling museum exhibition “Beautiful Losers”.
By 1997 she started directing films. Her films have played at many festivals including Tribeca, Edinburgh, Rotterdam, Los Angeles and Havana, and on PBS. She has had two books of her photographs published - Bicycle Gangs of New York ,and Some Kinda Vocation.
