Gego: drawing without paper

Venezuelan artist Gertrud Goldschmidt, aka Gego, did not consider herself a sculptor. Instead, the experimental engineer viewed her delicate geometric wire forms as “drawing without paper.” Produced during the height of the Kinetic art movement, Gego’s three-dimensional pieces were all constructed by hand using industrial and found materials. Reticularea (1969,) was created by linking metal meshes and nets. “My work is based on doing.”
