Take the word ‘commune’. In both its noun form and verb form, it is defined by inclusivity. ‘To commune’ and ‘a commune’ subsists upon a free flow of ideas, the democratic exchange of thought and the core belief that we exist better when we come together as a group than we do as individuals. This is a foundational tenet of who we are.

As a design firm, we are particularly concerned with the visual world and its emotional repercussions. From our early days, we have understood that whatever we produce will be seen and interpreted personally and subjectively. Confronted with this, some might advise ‘tread lightly’ or ‘be careful not to offend’. But we’ve always strived for an approach that reflects the inclusivity mentioned above. We say how we feel because we believe that within a thriving community, this precious right is met with respect. From our standpoint, how we choose to express ourselves has far less to do with a certain political agenda or a partisan heel-dig, than it does with upholding our democratic values for equality, provoking necessary discussions, and ultimately finding the common ground we all stand and build upon.

Our posters and graphic ephemera have served as our voice for 14 years and this year is no different. When we have something to say, we’d rather show you than tell you. Our graphics team takes our ethos and applies it to whatever might be happening in the world around us. It’s a world we’re all part of, and we don’t shy away from acknowledging that.

In 2020 our world was turned upside down. More than ever we need to come together in order to move forward. It’s bigger than each of us alone. It’s bigger than the 328 million of us living in this behemoth of a country. This year our graphic offering is about using that immense collective power and taking that first important step for change. Although we have a very specific idea of the best way this is done (Biden! Kamala!), we just want to show that we’re doing this — each of us together — for the betterment of the entire world.
